New Railway To Connect Cambodia And Vietnam

It is part of the Singapore-Kunming railroad project, so it will be a key railroad for Cambodia to transport commodities to regional and global markets, especially in the framework of ASEAN-China Free Trade Area.

The feasibility study for the construction was implemented by the Chinese Railway Ministry’s Third Railway Survey and Design Institute since July 2009 with a cost about 3 million USD funded by China.

As planned, the railroad is 257 kilometers in length, starting in Kampong Speu Province’s Oudong District, pass by Kratie Province’s Snuol District and end at Vietnam’s Loc Ninh District in the Southern border Province of Binh Phuoc.

Experts have finalized the total cost for the construction of the Vietnam – Cambodia is about 686 million USD, according to a feasibility study for the construction begining from Kampong Speu Province (Cambodia) to the Southern border Province of Binh Phuoc (Vietnam).

However, this money is not including the settlement compensations for residents affected by the project.

“The project will provide huge economic benefits to Cambodia, especially on the development of agriculture and mineral resources, as well as tourism sector”, experts said. The study result will be submitted to Prime Minister Hun Sen to make decision.

The railway will be part of an intra-Asian railway that runs from Singapore to China via Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is expected to be complete within 30 months.

The Quieter Side Of Leafy Con Dao

Quiet yellow-sand beaches and historical sites may lure visitors to Con Dao but it’s the old tropical trees that protect them from the scorching sunshine in the archipelago off the Southern Province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

There are a number of cay bang trees which are over 100 years old and hang over Ton Duc Thang and other roads in Con Dao to provide respite from the heat for tourists, who ride past on their motorbikes or stroll around.

Strong winds and sunshine may be not be your idea of a nice break but these noticeable characteristics have turned out to contribute to shaping the trees into distinctive bonsais. The trees are spread out over two lanes of the seaside roads and they shield pedestrians taking a leisurely stroll on the pavement between the tree lines and mossy yellow walls of the old prisons, from the sun.

From tourists resorts, beyond the lines of tropical trees in the esplanade, you can witness the calm of the sea, with fishing boats bobbing on the water and the distant mountains.

At a little coffee shop called Con Son, you can sip a cup of coffee and rest after a long trek at the seaside or in the forests.

Breaths of wind blow in from the ocean sending red leaves of the tropical trees down onto your table as drops of coffee are slowly seeping through the filter, and whet traveler’s appetite for more adventure in the quiet town of Con Dao.

Inside and outside this small town there are other types of ancient trees including the banyan whose roots cover the ruins of historical sites. Underneath these roots contain untold stories about the bravery of revolutionary fighters who shed blood for the independence of Vietnam.

Conical Hat Maker Sustains Tradition

THUA THIEN-HUE — One of Hue City's most endearing images is that of the beautiful girl wearing an Ao Dai (traditional robe) and a conical hat, singing folk songs while floating down the Huong (Perfume) River on a wooden rowing boat.

For many people, Hue's conical hats have long been treasured symbols of the once imperial city (situated in Thua Thien-Hue Province), shields against sun and rain, and, for one particular woman, a personal "weapon' in times of distress.

Tourists visiting Hue City often prefer the conical hats made by disabled Tran Thi Thuy for her incredible handiwork.

Born into a conical hat making family, Thuy's future has always seemed inevitably connected to the tradition despite being born with a crippled hand.

When she was young, she usually helped her mother to make hats. She made it day by day as a basic game, with the first product when she was ten.

She hard working from the basic step to fluently, her mother said: “my daughter is the most skilful artisan in the family”.

When the former royal city was recognised as a World Cultural Heritage site by the UN cultural agency UNESCO in 1993, tourists began flocking to the city in drones, turning conical hats into favourable souvenirs.

Once upon visit Thuy’s workshop, an Australian tourist asked her to make him a hat with her name embroidered inside. Not long after, another tourist group also from Australia request their own hats with her name inside.

Since then, Thuy’s conical hats have become famous to the globe.

"Thuy, famous for making hats with only one hand, is known as one of the best hat makers in Viet Nam due to the extraordinary quality and craftsmanship of her work,"

Rare Species Of Gibbon Discovered In Vietnam

The Conservation International (CI) has discovered a community of critically endangered northern white-cheeked crested gibbons in remote Vietnamese forests, near the Vietnam-Laos border.

Scientists from the CI said--that a substantial population of 455 critically endangered northern white-cheeked crested gibbons were found living at high altitudes and far from human settlements in the Pu Mat National Park in the central province of Nghe An.

The community represents two thirds of the total number in Vietnam and the only confirmed viable population of the variety worldwide.

"This is an extraordinarily significant find, and underscores the immense importance of protected areas in providing the last refuges for the region’s decimated wildlife," CI president Dr Russell Mittermeier told the AFP.

Gibbons, which are threatened across the world, are considered the "most romantic" of primates as they mate for life and serenade their partners with song.

Habitat loss and hunting for the pet trade, and the assumed medicinal value of primate body parts are among the major threats to the creatures in Vietnam, the CI statement said.

White-cheeked gibbon numbers are thought to have declined by as much as 80 percent in the last 45 years, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

Mittermeier, who also works with the IUCN, described the species as "on the brink of extinction".

They are believed to be functionally extinct in China and while there could be significant numbers in Laos, CI said a lack of research means the situation in the country is unclear.

But CI said, plans to build a road through the Pu Mat area to increase patrols on the Vietnam-Laos border pose a serious threat to the future of the rare primates.

"The major issue will be the hunting of these gibbons that were previously protected by the harsh terrain; so gun control will be vital," said primatologist Luu Tuong Bach, a consultant to CI who led field surveys for the research.

"Without direct protection in Pu Mat National Park, it is likely that Vietnam will lose this species in the near future."

Large Population Of Rare Gibbons Discovered In Vietnam

The lively morning calls of a rare species of gibbon has led to the discovery of the only known "viable" community of the talkative primates in remote Vietnamese forests, conservationists said Monday.

A "substantial" population of 455 critically endangered northern white-cheeked crested gibbons were found living at high altitudes and far from human settlements on the border with Laos, Conservation International (CI) said.

Researchers, who had previously found sparse groups in other areas, used the animals' "loud, elaborate and prolonged" calls to locate the creatures in Pu Mat National Park in Nghe An Province, Northern Vietnam.

The community represents two thirds of the total number in Vietnam and the "only confirmed viable population" of the variety in the world.

"This is an extraordinarily significant find, and underscores the immense importance of protected areas providing the last refuge for the region’s decimated wildlife," said CI president Dr Russell Mittermeier.

Discovering Dinh An Mat Craft Village

Visitors to Sa Dec Town in the Mekong Delta Province of Dong Thap can admire gardens full of colourful flowers in spring time or visit Huynh Thuy Le House where French hit movie L’amant (The Lover) was filmed.

But there is another side to this area of the delta and tourists should take time to have a look at Dinh An sleeping mat craft village in Dinh Yen Commune, Lap Vo District.

Located is around 33 kilometers from Sa Dec Town, the Craft village lies along the bank of Hau River. Through the passage of time and industrial development, the village has stood strong for almost 100 years and it is a source of pride for locals and an attractive tourist site.

For a long time, sleeping mats were a way of life in Vietnam. People still use the mats to sleep or sit on and not only in homes as they are used in religious ceremonies or sacred places or festivals. In Vietnamese culture, a beautiful sleeping mat is very important for newly-weds and the mat is considered part of many love stories.

The main material to make sleeping mats is lat trees. Every household, in the village, has one or two weaving looms. The craft is handed down to younger generations in the craft village. It is a fascinating spectacle for visitors to see the whole family gather to make mats as they choose lat strings to dry, weave and decorate.

Gleaming And Beautiful Sight Of Perfume River

For a long time, Huế has been famous for many beautiful and ancient landscapes, and one of them is the Perfume River.

Perfume River flows mildly like a silk range and leads to Vỹ Dạ garden, Thiên Mụ pagoda, Bạch Yến River and Huyền Không pier one after another. All of these four destinations are magnificent, peaceful and ancient.

Along with those beautiful and romantic scenes, Huế is also famous for many pleasure activities, which are very interesting such as “Releasing boat”, “Playing with the moon”, “Huế singing”, “Sleeping on boat” and “Playing with verse, all these activities are associated with Perfume River and only have in Huế.

“Sleeping on the boat” is just a name, since nobody come to the boats for sleeping but only for enjoying the cool wind, watching the moon and the sky and listening to the beautiful songs.

“Playing with verse” is a literary gamble, which enquires players to be very intelligent as well as to have good plans and strategies. The interesting point of the game is that players cannot only make use of all knowledge about literature that they have but also learn many new things from others.

Huế singing is originated from the combination of traditional music and royal music. This elegant and attractive kind of music is really worth listening. Tourists would have a chance to sit on the imperial boats that kings and lords used to be seated in the old time.

In the hold of the boat, there is an imposing orchestra includes nearly all kinds of Vietnamese traditional musical instruments.

The bandsmen as well as the singers are still very young, and they all wear “áo dài”, the Vietnamese traditional clothes. On the prow of the boats, there is a wide and airy space for enjoying the moonlight and the fresh air.

When the night falls down, Perfume River becomes more fantastic. The lamplight spreads on the river just like silver. The winds blow softly and the boat floats slowly. Everything makes travelers feel so peaceful.

In the distance across the river, Thiên Mụ pagoda appears vaporously, Phước Duyên tower looks like being laminated with the moonlight. The scene is so charming and romantic.

Having a night on Perfume River, listening to Huế singing and enjoying the fresh cool air along with the beautiful scenes around, tourists would discover some feelings that could only be found in Huế.

12 Ways To Protect Your Health When Travelling

Look after your health when you’re travelling with our tips and advice for staying germ-free and healthy;

1. Always carry disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, wet wipes and spare tissues, which will come in handy when travelling with children or when you’re using less than sanitary facilities!

2. Bear in mind that the blankets and pillows on your aircraft might not be regularly cleaned so take your own. Same goes for your aircraft seat, tray table and seatback pocket, just think how many people could have sat there since they were last disinfected! Minimize contact with your face and use your own pillow for sleeping, especially if you sleep with your mouth open! 7. Don’t drink alcohol just before or during your flight (even if it is complimentary) as this will dry you out and alcohol is an immune-suppressant.

8. If you are germ-laden then be a considerate traveler and keep your germs to yourself.

9. Carry a first aid kit and include some cold remedies, painkillers etc as your destination may not always sell what you need.

10. Avoid restaurants and food stalls that show unhygienic signs; dirty surroundings, undercooked or overcooked food, poor hygiene from the waiters etc. Trust your instincts!

11. If you do eat something dodgy when travelling make sure you drink plenty of water, get lots of sleep and eat dry toast and bananas to keep your strength up.

12. Check to see if you need any pre travel injections, booster vaccines or malaria tablets for affected areas.
